Best WordPress Hosting Services

Finding the best WordPress hosting for yourself can be a tad confusing, especially with all the marketing.

Companies turn otherwise simple products into something similar to rocket science.

Despite the small differences in language from company to company, you’ll find the same plans appear over and over again, with a few exceptions.

We’ll make it real simple for you to actually understand what the “best” WordPress Hosting actually means. And also help you smell a bad deal, even when words get a bit jumbled up.

The Fundamentals: What is Hosting?

Glad you asked.

Hosting gives your site legs, letting it broadcast its content onto the World Wide Web, using the servers of your chosen provider. Before you get a host, you’re offline.

Also – before getting a host, you need a domain which is very straightforward. Simply get it from a trusted domain registrar. If you’ve already got one—then by all means—proceed.

Best WordPress Hosting (UK) 🇬🇧

First we’ll jump into reviews. Then expand on exactly what the words used in various plans mean—that’s toward the end of this guide, in the supporting section.

Skip ahead now if you’re not confident on what WordPress is, or how the general types of web hosting differ. We also get into SSL’s. Otherwise, it’s review time. Off we go then..

1. Hostinger – UK’s Best WordPress Hosting

Terrific Value for Money (£1.99/Month) 🤝

Key Specifications:

  • Free Domain name & Site Creator
  • Starts at £1.99 monthly
  • Multi-Language Customer Support
  • 30 GB Storage
  • Designed for Beginners
  • 1 Year of Free Domain

PROS

  • Quick Loading Times
  • 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
  • Starts Extremely Cheap

CONS

  • Not as Many Bonus Features

Want less innovation and more of a slobbering, shoestring budget? It’s the starting point for many businesses, particularly high-street fast-food ones.

Hostinger’s been around roughly fifteen years. During that time, their uber-cheap hosting offerings have built their user-base to 29 million. You’d think it’d be a dodgy service. But no.

They actually post up server updates with uptimes scores publically, to demonstrate that they’re on the ball. Despite costing less per month than a packet of cray-pees. Our Hostinger review proves that this host gives you just that.

24/7 WP Support ☎️

Support every day of the week, every minute of the hour. This is dandy considering that Hostinger’s already undercutting their competition.

The support team is made of designated WP experts, so they’ll have a good eye for advanced fixes. And the company puts a lot of emphasis on customer support.

Support is by live chat 24/7. This is backed up by lots of articles on a bunch of common issues, so that you can resolve your issue manually—if need be—via written instruction.

BitNinja Security 🤫

Hostinger has solid infrastructure against cyber attacks. They use the most state of the art technologies provided by their partner BitNinja. Your website will have the latest, comprehensive industry-standard security protection, through this cool alliance.

A little worryingly, you have to pay for the SSL… That feature adds extra security to your site. This certificate should come free but we’ll overlook that fact. Make sure you get it!

Free Biz Domain 💼

You’ll need a domain before you getting a hosting plan. WP Starter gives a free domain. This is a useful budget/time-save.

If you choose the most popular mid-tier, you’re starting at £2.99, which is still a cut under other companies.

You may want to ignore the first tier—and the £1.99 deal—as that doesn’t give you Premium WP access.

Zyro: Hostinger’s Website Builder 🏗️

Let’s look into Hostinger’s new website builder – Zyro.

Zyro (Zyro Review) is supported by the regular features we come to expect from any website builder, such as a free SSL Certificate, unlimited SSD storage, and unlimited bandwidth.

But as a bonus, there are some cool new features that are unique to Zyro. For example, Hostinger’s new Logo Maker will allow you to create a logo for your brand in no time. On the other hand, the AI writer will take care of your website copy in a professional manner.

As a side note – be a tad wary of hidden renewal price increases.

Clean & Easy Interface 🧼

A not-too-bad interface that certainly beats cPanel. Good on Hostinger for creating their own customized version for site tools. Here you can manage things like email accounts, your site’s data files, and retrieve account information. In truth, we’re quite impressed with what they’ve rustled up.

hostinger interface

Find the WP icon. That will take you right into WordPress where you can begin editing your site, making it unique to your needs and business preferences.

Developer-Friendly 👨‍💻

If you didn’t know, WP itself is the result of many developers working together. Hostinger’s team actively contributes to the WordPress codebase.

That shows how much the company respects developers. They apply constant updates to enhance their server reliability and speeds.

If you think you might expand your site in the future through custom developments, WP-CLI and GIT are at the tip of your fingers—giving the developer maximal control.

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee 💵

Hostinger is cheap and proven. If you’re on a shoestring, consider Hostinger’s extremely affordable plans because it doesn’t get cheaper. Also, you get a special discount for our readers by using the code “HOSTINGDATA” at checkout…

Despite this, they’re confident that their users will be satisfied. Give them a go for a month with no risk to the coffers. There are less features than other companies. However, you get  to be online, secure and solid.

2. SiteGround: Best Customer Support

Great at Everything (£2.99/Month) 🥇

Key Specifications

  • Recommended by WordPress.org
  • Fully optimised for WordPress
  • WordPress Auto install and Autoupdates
  • In-house caching & migrations
  • WPStarter for easy site kick off
  • Expert and quick WordPress support

PROS

  • Special Focus on Security
  • WordPress Expert Support
  • Recommended for Beginners & Vets

CONS

  • Yearly Subscription Required

We’ve spoken more extensively about the features you can expect to find, as SiteGround topped our list of all the UK’s best web hosting solutions. So we won’t duplicate here where avoidable.

Unlike some of the marketing-heavy sites, SG has a neat and simple layout. Everything’s optimally easy to find. This also goes for the actual product. These guys have been around since 2004 with 2 million domains using them. They’re not so marketing-heavy but very user-friendly and user-oriented.

Have a look at user reviews online and you’ll see high ratings of 98% and more. And they have all the capacity of any other top-league service provider.

Quick Install ⏩

Here’s the process: Click on Managed WordPress Hosting. That’ll open up three tiers: StartUp, GrowBig and GoGeek—the cheapest at under 3 squid a month.

Siteground prices

If you’re migrating over a current site—do this in only a few clicks once you get the plan using SiteGrounds very own WP Migrator plugin. However, we’d recommend at least GrowBig for businesses who expect to have tens of thousands of visitors each month.

You’ll automatically get the premium versions of WordPress on that or the GoGeek option, putting you ahead for WP support/server resources regarding traffic-flow.

We’re impressed with the lack of marketing fluff—no hypnotic screens full of thousands of options and sales lingo.

Secure – Free SSL Certificate 🔒

Every plan comes with industry standard Let’s Encrypt SSL and Wildcard SSL certificates. Having one of these is no longer a bonus. We highly recommend you obtain one.

You don’t have to worry about that with SG. Your data—and those of your visitors for that matter—will be protected during transmissions. They’ve partnered with Let’s Encrypt. As long as SG is your host, integration and updates will be automatic and perfectly free. Scroll to the supporting section for more.

Free Daily Backups 🔙

Another demonstration that they’re playing at the industry-standard level. Every hosting plan features FREE daily backups and restore functionality. Say you delete something and want to recover it. Or want to revert to a previous site design, after second thought. The last 30 days will be saved on SG’s server.

Grab what you need through a complete restoration. It’s fast, and has integrity measures in place, to reduce the effect on traffic. If you want to download your own copies of your site, you can do this through the control panel— completely free across all plans.

If you are interested in doing extra backups, take a look at our review of the best WordPress backup plugins.

Free Pro Email 📧

This is usually how companies get extra pennies out of their customers. But SG’s given you the full pro email service at no additional fee, making it one of the best UK email hosts around.

Make as many email accounts as you want, which is fantastic for sectioning the parts of your business, or for running promotional events.

The webmail layout is very user friendly. You can create automatic reply systems and forwarding rules, plus more.

Staging Areas 🏗️

Creativity needs the space to experiment. SG has a test environment feature, so that you can make site design/functionality alterations in a place away from your actual site. It will also help you grow accustomed to their website build functionality.

If you happen to dislike it, you might want to take a look at the best website builders for UK.

Build and test out your test website. Install updates as your biz grows. Visit it without your audience being able to, until you’re happy with what you have.

Decide to throw it out and your main site will be unaffected. This is also automatically backed up with the free backup feature, letting you unleash your creativity.

24/7 Customer Support 📲

You’ll get expert WP hosting support as a standard. Support response is super-fast and 24/7, with capable individuals who are said to each be multi-skilled.

SG has an advantage in that it’s at the same level of quality as the biggest hosts around. But it isn’t so bloated—resultantly, you end up with a more tailored experience.

Cool Collab Tools/Interface 🤩

You can simply add collaborators, giving them access to your site for specific purposes. Or make full user transfers if you develop/sell sites – more about this in our detailed SiteGround review.

siteground new user interface

SG’s taken great care to tailor their experience to the user, from start to finish. That’s where their spend has gone.

Optional WP Default

There’s some controversy about whether it’s necessary for a host to install their own WordPress management interface when WordPress could be used directly.

I don’t get the fuss as you can just hover over to plugins on your dashboard. That will take you to the below screen, where you can deactivate Starter. Check the second box called WordPress Starter, then hit “apply.” After that, there’s no user difference from logging through WordPress.

3. Kinsta: The Ultimate Premium WordPress Host

Outstanding Quality & Ease-of-Use (£28.50/Month) 👌

Key Specifications:

  • Secure like Fort Knox
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • Daily site backups
  • Outstanding technical support
  • Constantly improves site performance
  • Did I mention how fast it is? Because it is fast

PROS

  • Extremely fast
  • 99.99% uptime guarantee
  • Highly automated

CONS

  • Costly for Some
  • No Domain Registration
  • No Webmail Features

iron man in actionThis is pretty much the Hosting service I could see Tony Stark using. As mentioned in our Kinsta review, its technology is impressive, powerful and sublimely easy to use.

That being said, you’ll also need a similar budget to Iron Man to afford it.

Of course, I’m joking about that last part, but this is definitely a premium product. You might need to empty your wallet a bit more than the other options at £28.50 a month (for basic hosting).

But if you’re dedicated to having one of the best hosting services available, it’s a price worth paying!

Kinsta was created by a team of WordPress aficionados who were deeply unsatisfied with the hosting options available to them, so they made their own.

And what a product they created.

Already used by some huge up and coming names like Ubisoft and Workforce.com, this platform clearly has something to offer for the rigorous demands of a thriving online business.

A Need for Speed 🚈

I’m going to hark on about this because it’s one of the most impressive features. The company even dubs itself “Speed obsessive”, and boy do they live up to it; boasting an average speed increase of 200%

Whilst utilizing many technological features to achieve this (Nginx, PHP 7.4, LXD software containers, MariaDB), Kinsta’s most impressive feature is how this speed almost never drops, regardless of traffic. Their traffic spike optimization is second to none, and you’ll never have to suffer lag if your site suddenly blows up.

Ironclad Security 🔒

Kinsta is pretty obsessive when it comes to security. They utilize all the most up to date security measures and monitor your website constantly during uptime (which is 99.99% of the time).

Coming with an inbuilt SSL compatibility, hardware firewalls, and a constant stream of updates and fixes, the likelihood of any security breaches with Kinsta is essentially zero.

If security is a big concern for you and your website, you couldn’t do much better than Kinsta.

Google Cloud-Based ☁️

Rather than being hosted on a singular server location, the use of the cloud servers means your site can make use of Google’s numerous server locations. This gives far greater flexibility to your site, allowing it to be quickly and effortlessly optimized to the best locations.

This is one of the main ways Kinsta can keep so consistently quick. It also means that as they grow in popularity, the hosting service can’t be overloaded and suffer performance issues; if anything, it means it can only get quicker.

Innovative Site Management 👔

Kinsta’s site management interface and tools are very easy to use and navigate but don’t sacrifice depth for this ease of use. Though it is extremely easy to manage your site manually, you’ll rarely need to, the mainly autonomous management is advanced enough to solve issues without the need for input.

But rather than simply force updating your site, you can let the Kinsta team know if you want it done automatically, or have it left down to you. This gives you the options of both autonomy and automation.

The simplified staging function is especially useful for testing out coding alterations and plugins for a quick test-run before you make the system live. Overall, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t go with Kinsta except their price tag.

4. A2 Hosting: Fastest WordPress Host Around

Speedy & Reliable… But On More Expensive Plans (£9.60/Month) 💎

Key Specifications:

  • Free Migration From Another Host
  • Starts at £9.60 monthly
  • Higher-Tier Plans Among the Fastest Available
  • Unlimited Refund Policy
  • Free Recommended Plugins
  • Compatibility With Various CMS

PROS

  • Data Centers All Over the Globe
  • Extremely Fast
  • Starts Extremely Cheap

CONS

  • Cheaper Plans Are Not as Fast or Reliable
  • Suffered a Total Security Breach in 2021
  • Average Uptimes Lower than Industry Standard

A2 advertises themselves more in one area over any other: Performance.. This company is too interesting to skip, considering it’s  great future potential.

First let’s chat. Earlier in 2021, some users found their websites were down for a full month. “Ransomware” got into Singapore servers. To stop the virus, A2 shut down the whole site.

If you didn’t know, cybercrime is a booming industry. Once ransomware gets into a company’s software, the company may have to pay the hacker to kill it. A2 has since released a public statement that they will ensure this security breach doesn’t happen again. Just thought I should make that disclaimer. Now on we go:

Turbo Tier 🚀

Recently, we’ve heard a fair bit of noise regarding the Turbo option. When a tier advertises itself as 20x faster that’s something to pay attention to 😮

A2’s actually pretty competitive if you go for one of their first two. You’ll find yourself paying less compared to many of the main competitors.

There are three tier choices: the Lite, Swift, and Turbo plans. Let’s focus on Turbo in this section of our review. Is it truly blazing fast? We’ll find out now.

Super Migration Support! 🧳

The first time-saving feature: Let’s say you’re with another company who you’re not pleased with. A2 will migrate your site over to a chosen plan of theirs for free. Their team will take care of this in 3-5 business days. This means you can focus on taking care of your business rather than deal with technical issues.

a2hosting migration request form

Migration’s usually a complex process where things can easily go wrong. Having a specialist do it for you is a god-send!

Average Uptimes 😒

Their Turbo plan runs on better hardware than Lite or Swift. The idea is that this should give you the edge online.

We’re skeptical of how consistent A2 Hosting currently is even at the highest tier. Recent tests show rather average uptime scores. One user experienced over seven minutes of downtime in ten days worth of test data, which is about 4.5 hours in a year – not a good sign.

If you’re a medium-sized business with a chunky WP theme we’d suggest looking into high-quality VPS hosts (scroll to the end of this guide for more info).

Super-Fast Speeds 🏃‍♀️

Once you buy the Turbo plan—for speeds of up to 20x faster—install the special A2 Optimizer. That will activate Turbo Boost. Search for it in plugins.

The fastest response times come to those on the US mainland—though we are talking about milliseconds. Have a look at some cheap UK based hosts on the mainland.

In my opinion, you can possibly get the same performance boost by using plugins like Jetpack and WP Super Cache without going for the highest tier.

a2 hosting dashboard

We’d recommend the mid-range Swift tier rather than Turbo. Just install those plugins, which are all free by the way. There are others, like AutoOptimize.

Save a bit of dosh—and nosh for that matter—for the same output. Get the same features the Turbo tier has. Cut your costs nearly in half. #notshabby

Incredible Refund Policy 😌

You’ll be eligible for a full refund for the first 30 days. After the first 30 days, you can STILL get a refund for the amount of time left on your contract.

That’s some self-confidence. We’ve not seen a better refund policy anywhere; perhaps it’s the future of hosting refund policies. The only gamble here is time-cost.

Have a look at their offerings. See if moving to one of their plans is an upgrade for your website. The migration policy is so simple that it’s worth a shot.

5. HostGator: Best WordPress Small Business Hosting

“From Zero to Hero” Scalability (£4.76/Month) 🦸‍♂️

Key Specifications:

  • Great 24/7 Customer Support
  • Cloud-Based
  • Free Website Transfer From Another Host
  • Starts at £4.76 monthly
  • Detailed Analytics
  • Easy Scalability

PROS

  • Reliable Uptime Guarantees
  • Engaging Customer Support
  • Free SEO Tools

CONS

  • Expensive With Pricing ‘Tricks’
  • Extra Fees Everywhere
  • Can Appear to Be Slow

Get your head in the clouds more often. What the heavy-weights in marketing—HG—do well, is infrastructure. They’ve many data centers across the world. This gives you access to a very reliable pool of resources and uptime. With the confidence that you’ll get your money’s worth when you pay more.

Now the first thing to know is that we’re not going to look at the standard WP Managed options, as we think HostGator stands out in terms of their cloud option.

Just install WP once you set up. HG uses 1-Click installs for that, so it’s nothing to worry about. The support team can take some time but will help you out if you have any issues.

Twice as Fast ⚡

A specific WordPress Managed Hosting plan will likely be on a shared server. Honestly, no shared host can compete with the cloud in terms of page loading speeds.

Cloud hosting is growing in popularity and HG has the infrastructure to deliver it well with their low-density cloud servers, multiple layers of caching, and cutting-edge hardware

This means your page load times will occur in the blink of an eye. Your users will probably appreciate that as loading speed is one of the biggest determinants of an online purchase.

If you have a comprehensive WP theme—with lots of user options—getting on HG’s cloud plan is more. If you’re mid-sized, the highest cloud tier will give you an extra edge.

Better Security, Uptime & Privacy 💯

Cloud hosts create a virtual private network by clustering together. It’s especially handy for people who want their data protected—less risk of malware being sent to your site.

You’re already ahead of the rest if you’re using cloud hosting. About 98% of websites use the regular sharing of servers. They feed on a much lesser number of servers.

They’re all on the same site too, usually. So if that site gets overworked—or becomes targeted by cybercriminals—their sites may go down for long periods of time.

Another understated benefit of going on the cloud is that other sites can’t transfer viruses to yours. Protect sensitive data with more certainty this way.

4x More Scalability 🌃

New biz owners dream of the day when they have to worry about dealing with too many orders and eyeballs. But when that day comes, you’ll want to be ready.

Cloud hosting lets you scale up your resource capacity to handle sudden traffic increases as your popularity grows. And you can do this ASAP, whenever you want.

4x More Scalable

There are a.. host of reasons that you may want that ability. Perhaps you’re streaming some informational service, or you have a time-window on a new product.

When it’s of prime importance that you don’t crash, Gator’s cloud lets you multiply your capacity by four times at the click of a few buttons. They’ve recently ramped up allocations.

Easily See Your Stats 📈

Very slick charts and dashboards show you your site’s performance in an intuitive dashboard. This is easy to use for the techie and average person alike.

Get quick glimpses into visitor trends, monitor your page loading/download speeds, check your uptime, and see yourself in the search rankings.

hostgator analytics window

This type of intuitive interfacing is particularly critical for content creators, or brands who want to keep eyeballs on their biz. Get immediate notification if you’re slipping.

You can also get warning if you need to manage your resources better—perhaps by scaling up or down in your plan. Beforehand, this would have required technicians with coding know-how.

1-Click Migration 🎒

One very impressive thing is the 1-Click ability for migration transfers of your old site, something that can usually be very messy. Considering how HostGator is one of the best reseller hosts out there, this feature is even more handy.

This is another testament to the infrastructure that the big boys have. Don’t forget to look for coupons to save on this plan. I’ll rue the day when HG doesn’t have something to save you a few bob.

6. BlueHost: Well-Reputed WordPress Website Hosting

“Official WordPress Host” Shared (£2.33/Month) 🌊

Key Specifications:

  • Advertised 400ms Loading Speeds
  • 99.99% Uptime Averages
  • Shared Plan Offers SSD 50GB
  • Unrestricted Bandwidth
  • 24/7 Customer Support
  • Fast WP Installations

PROS

  • London Data Centres
  • Shared Plan £2.33/mo
  • Charges in GBP

CONS

  • Requires Long Contracts
  • Speeds May Not Be As Advertised

In the deep seas lies a giant squid with a reputation that precedes it. According to WordPress themselves, BlueHost (review) is one of the best and brightest hosts for small businesses and other website owners—which is why the company has made it onto the WordPress recommended list of hosts, which is no easy feat considering how competitive this landscape is.

What is behind this endorsement? Some sources put BlueHost load times as capable of hitting around 400ms average speeds using London data centres with average times of 99.99%—and the starter shared hosting plan offers 50 GB of solid-state storage, unrestricted bandwidth, 24/7 customer support—plus fast WordPress installations.

Around 2 million websites use BlueHost, therefore—and each plan comes with a free domain and SSL cert.

SEO-Friendly 🙌

Let’s take a step back. Is your site sloooooow? It might be a question on as many websites’ minds as it is yours. The Internet is a global marketplace of ideas, and everyone wants to buy the same content as the rest of the world. Therefore, it’s no wonder that so many sites are becoming faster and more efficient today.

To ensure your website loads quickly and efficiently, you need to follow a few simple rules—such as using the right hosting service for your type of website and keeping things simple (no plugins)—and you’ll have no trouble staying ahead of the curve.

One of the key metrics that search engines look for, when deciding whether to rank you, is your website’s user experience performance. You might not know where to start—at least you won’t have any excuses left when it comes to making sure your website loads quickly and efficiently.

The main decision is whether to opt for one of the fast though virtual private hosting or dedicated plans offered by the trusted WP hosting service.

Well-Reputed Name in the Industry 🗿

So who the heck are these guys anyway? If you’ve been in the hosting game for any good amount of time, you will have heard of them, for sure… BlueHost is a leading provider of online hosting services—founded in 1999 by Rich Burt, who was also the co-founder of HostGator.

So they’ve been around for more than two decades… Today, BlueHost is a well-known, and well reputed, name in the hosting industry, and it’s grown over the years into a global leader with offices in more than 30 countries. BlueHost has always been known for its speed and reliability, and it attributes this to its commitment to delivering quality hosting services to its customers.

BlueHost’s dedication to quality has led to its status as a leading hosting provider—who say they remain committed to innovation and evolve with the times, adding new services and tools that best fit the needs of its customers.

Cornucopia ‘Bread Basket’ of Features 🦑

“Do you want more?”, says BlueHost to the screaming crowd. Well, let’s oblige—the following are some of the top features BlueHost offers:

Faster Load Times 🏎️: The most impressive speed increase you can get on a website is with the help of a CDN—a Content Delivery Network is a group of servers that distribute the content you’re hosting across a cloud network so that it’s available to all your customers regardless of their geographic location. With a CDN, your server sends the content you’re hosting to the closest server instead of sending it directly to your customers’ computers. As a result, your site loads more quickly, and you achieve faster load times.

Robust Security 💂: It’s important to have a secure website, even if you never worry about theft or damage. Your visitors’ sensitive data is encrypted when it’s on your server, and no one but you has access to it—to top that, BlueHost uses industry-standard SSL technology for all of its connections, making the entire site secure.

24/7/365 Customer Service : You’ll frequently come across websites that promise to be “online now,” “load fast,” or “25/7” but then don’t follow through on it. That’s not the case with BlueHost—which has a dedicated support line staffed around the clock—offering free guides and tutorials on how to take your site to the next level.

Do you still want more?

Data Centres that BlueHost Offers 🏙️

Sure—before we close out, then, let’s talk about the advantage of having a solid range of data centres around the world, to strategically meet the demands of the audience, regardless of whether they are located.

One of the most important things about any hosting service is the data centres that host it. There are a few hosting services that exclusively use data centres, meaning they don’t have a regional centre where they store your files. This helps them save on costs, and it also allows them to provide faster service to their customers.

The following are data centres that BlueHost uses: Canada,  Northern Europe, the U.S, South America, Europe (that includes London), and Japan.

*Bows to applause.* 🙇🏼‍♂️

7. HostPapa: Top Cheap WordPress Hosting

“The Logo Says it All—Cheap, Chirpy, No-Nonsense” (£2.33/Month) 👴

Key Specifications:

  • Continuous Phone & Email Support
  • Dedicated Website Chat Team
  • Add Additional Servers and Storage as Your Business Grows
  • One-Click WordPress Install
  • Cheap Plans

PROS

  • Europe Data Centres
  • Starts From £1.95/mo
  • 100GB Storage

CONS

  • Smaller Web Host

Next up is your friendly neighbourhood host—rather than fighting crime at night or delivering pizzas, HostPapa has made a name for itself as a generous but relatively cheap WordPress web host.

Do you own a small business or personal blog? Do you need more search engine visibility, better management of your website traffic, and affordable web hosting? If so, then HostPapa is the right choice for you. Started in 2005—with one-tenth of a million dollars in funding—the company has grown into one of the largest and most popular hosts in the world.

Today, they reportedly have 14 million monthly visitors and boast 200,000 customer reviews.Let’s take a look at why you should consider taking your small business or personal blog with HostPapa seriously.

The Humble Beginnings of HostPapa 🍕

HostPapa is like your favourite fast food pizza place. But it was one of the first companies to cater to the growing demand for hosting services in 2005. After witnessing the success of its hosting services, the founders realised that there was an even bigger demand for hosting services that were efficient, secure and reliable.

Today, HostPapa has grown into one of the largest web hosting companies in the world. They’re a highly reputable and established web hosting company with a track record of success that dates back several years—the company’s services include web hosting, cloud hosting, email hosting, and domain registration.

With solid revenue from its hosting services as well as its cloud storage division, HostPapa is still relatively new to the big league of online hosting—but, some say, it shows no signs of slowing down.

The Top Features Line-Up 👯‍♀️

All-in-one solution 🌞: With HostPapa, you get everything you need for your website or blog in one place, which includes a robust content management system, a powerful website hosting solution, a cloud backup solution, and an email hosting service.

Easy scalability 🖱️: HostPapa’s scalability options allow you to easily add additional servers and storage space as your business grows—this feature makes your hosting experience flexible and efficient.

Easy to use 📙: Relatively speaking—using customer support is the simplest way to set up your WP web host. The company’s user-friendly website makes it easy for people to sign up for hosting services. There are also helpful blogs and a dedicated help section for any questions or issues you might have.

Availability 🌐: You can count on HostPapa to always be available when you need them, including 24/7 phone support, email support, and a dedicated website chat support team.

HostPapa Data Centres 🏢

HostPapa has data centres in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with the latter two serving as the home of the company’s cloud business unit.

The company also has data centres in China, where it offers hosting services to Chinese companies—for security reasons, data centres are usually located far from any city or major population centre.

8. DreamHost: Highly-Recommended by WordPress as a Host

“2nd-Most Recommended Host by WordPress” (£3.00/mo) ⭐

Key Specifications:

  • Hosting Websites since 1996
  • Strong Uptime Guarantees
  • Starter Plan Offers SSD 80GB
  • Unmetered Bandwidth
  • Industry-standard Customer Support
  • Quick WP Installations

PROS

  • Official WP Web Host
  • Shared Plan £3.00/mo
  • DreamHost Comes highly recommended by WordPress

CONS

  • Basic Storage Space on Shared Plans

In the great clash for Titanic dominance among the web hosts in the stars, DreamHost has managed to remain the second most recommended host, by WordPress themselves. They survived the battle in clash of landing in the stars—holding strong since their arrival on the scene in 1996.

They currently boast a portfolio of around 1.5 million websites hosted by them. And while they do not offer as much data on their shared plan as HostPapa does—80GB less SSD storage—you get all of the rest: free domain, security certificate, 1-click WP install, and unmetered bandwidth.

Since we last checked, DreamHost also had one of the longest moneyback guarantees in the game. (Just keep in mind that these guarantees usually don’t mean a full refund—but partial.)

What Makes DreamHost a Dream Host?

DreamHost was founded in 1999 as a managed WordPress hosting services company. The company’s founders, Kanner and Stoltenberg, were both experienced web developers. In the beginning, the duo created a hosting service for the hosting industry, called Web Development Hosting.

The first version of the service was released in 2002 and was called DreamPress. The name DreamHost was chosen as a tribute to the “Cloud” concept, which was very popular at the time. After one year of operation, the duo decided to focus solely on managed WordPress hosting.

In 2004, the founders launched their first managed WordPress hosting service, DreamPress Hosting—it came with loads of features, including a powerful media manager that allowed users to manage their entire site through a single dashboard.

Top WordPress Hosting Features

Today, DreamHost is a leading provider of managed WordPress hosting services. With more than 26 years experience in the hosting industry, DreamHost provides reliable and secure hosting solutions for WordPress websites.

The company offers the best web hosting for hosting WordPress websites with the most up-to-date security and performance. With very reliable and secure hosting, DreamHost also offers plenty of space for your website—even reportedly getting them to manage the whole site for you.

As we’ve hinted at, the top features of DreamHost are mainly related to WordPress. Sure, the platform includes lots of highly technical options, such as a built-in web server with load balancing, MySQL database hosting, a capable Performance WordPress hosting software, secure SSL certificate, and lots of space for your website. But the following are some of the top central DreamHost features:

Free Updates ⚙️: WordPress web hosting plans come with the server license and support a free update cycle, which means updates will come regularly and will probably solve most problems you might have.

24/7/365 Support 📞: WordPress is a software that’s easy to use but has a steep learning curve. If you’re having issues, you can always call the support line and talk to an operator who can help you out.

WordPress Security 🕶️: DreamHost is one of the highest rated WordPress hosting companies with a score of 99/100 on TrustProtection.com. This is likely because the company excels at protecting its customers’ data.

DreamHost Data Centres 🏭

While most managed WordPress hosting services offer unlimited space, DreamHost offers data centres with different plans that cater to different clients’ needs across the globe. Here’s a breakdown of the different data centre options:

  • Standard Data Centre ☁️: Comes with unlimited space, but the host can manage only one site.
  • Premium Data Centre ☁️: Only available with the high-end hosting plan. It comes with 4x the space of the standard data centre, as well as a private IP address for each site.
  • Cloud Data Centre ☁️: Super-duper-fast cloud hosting solutions that are managed by DreamHost. They’re designed to handle the huge loads that websites experience during peak hours.

InMotion Hosting is a San Diego-based company that was established in 2010. In the beginning, the company was known as Network Solutions and was owned by the same parent company, Endurance International. When the merger was complete, the company was renamed to In Motion Host.

Best WordPress Hosting (UK): Buying Guide

No overtime charge for this explanatory section. You’re welcome ladies and fellas.

SEO Impact: SSL Certificates 🔑

ssl security seoSSL stands for Secure Sockets Layers. Although what you will see at the end of the “HTTP” part of your URL is HTTPS.

HTTPS in full stands for Hypertext Transport Protocol Security. Sites with an SSL certificate will have also have a green lock icon on the URL bar.

After transfering your website from HTTP to HTTPS, all inbound/outbound communications go through encryptions and authentications.

Having a digital SSL certificate is crucial for increasing the level of trust—in terms of cybersecurity—between the web server and browser.

The protection happens through a 2048-bit key. Once you buy your SSL and have it installed on your site, the padlock becomes activated for secure connections.

Secure sites protect your information by parsing them through three layers:

  • ☑️ Information integrity—which removes the possibility of file corruption during transfer
  • ☑️ Authentication—to add a barrier between your site’s users and cybercriminals
  • ☑️ Encryption—to protect your site’s users from being tracked and their personal information hijacked.

But there’s more.. Have you considered the effect of not having an SSL on your search rankings?

Do SSL’s Affect Your SEO/Google Rankings?

ssl boost seoGoogle has hinted that they prefer HTTPS sites, and will favor it in their rankings—going so far as to say they’ll “continue working towards a web that’s secure by default.”

You even get a warning message on Google Chrome if you visit a non-HTTPS site, labeling that site as insecure, or “connection not secure.”

84% of eCommerce customers would leave their shopping cart if they were notified that the connection was insecure.

This has huge implications on sales. Since 2014, Google has factored HTTPS Vs. non-HTTPS into their algorithms. More than one study has detected that HTTPS sites rank higher in search engines than HTTP sites.

In other words, HTTPS sites have preferential traffic exposure. Not only that, they load much faster than HTTP sites.

The Bottom-Line

Your search rankings will be affected somewhat by now having an SSL. Your page loading speeds may be greatly affected.

But things seem to be leading toward greater penalizations for HTTP sites. Google have indicated they want HTTPS to eventually be an industry-standard.

For anyone involved in SEO, you’ll know that the terrain changes overnight. Meaningless articles crammed full of keywords used to rank. No longer.

Likewise only earlier this year, Google announced their desire for a secure web by default in the future. Thus, the extra cost is more than worth it in our opinion!

Should I Worry About Backing Up My Site? ♻️

The short answer is Yes. As the webmaster, you want to always be in control of your content—it’s your life’s work. Though automatic updates do this all by themselves.

Cybercrime

common ways of hacking wordpress websites

We’ve said this a thousand times: cybersecurity is the industry of the future. It’s booming so much because cybercrime is so prevalent.

Once a hacker gets control over your website, they may delete all of your information. Some cybercriminals get off on causing chaos.

Even the best security might become a target. YouTube hacks are a quite recent craze and example.

Content creators, who spent years cultivating an audience, lose everything. With backups, just restore your site to a point in time before the malware was introduced. This can also give you back control if a hacker gets in.

Development Creativity

Important files get deleted from time to time. Or a developer makes a code alteration for functionality that breaks your website. Restoration is as easy as a click and can save a lot of time. The more premium backup plans let you pinpoint a point in time by the hour.

This can be useful for particularly creative coders who are experimenting with new features for your site. No need to worry about stepping over into the deep end.

Update Issues

Servers, themes and browsers are making constant updates to keep your site running fluidly. It’s surprisingly common that an update causes something to go wrong. Automatic backups means you’re always confident there’s a file from at least the day before, to install and get back to base.

The same goes for new installations. There may be compatibility issues with add-ons like themes and plugins. These very powerful tools may play up from time to time.

We recommend having a backup in place before updating your site to a new theme, or before adding a WordPress plugin. Even a small glitch can cost sales.

Migrations

wordpress migration supportThese are notoriously messy, though some providers make the process straightforward. Things have been known to go wrong. Such is life and technology.

A lot happens during the migration process: you’re transferring all of your files from one server to another. Some users prefer sticking with lesser hosts to avoid wrecking their site.

It’s common sense to ensure you have a carbon copy of your website to hand, thus allowing you the freedom to scale up hosting arrangements without the risk of losing important data.

What is WordPress Again?

I’m going to the real basics as we’ve all been there before.. Too many times, people delve into the world of website creation with a feeble understanding of key elements.

WordPress is a Content Management System—CMS in short. In truth, that just means it’s some software that you can put to use. In this case, WP was written and created by thousands of people around the world, which we call “open-source.”

Its standard package is free, letting you use a standard template to build. People originally used WP to blog—otherwise known as journaling. If you want a blog, WP is remarkable.

It’s also remarkable at any almost any other function that a website could be expected to offer. People sell retail. Fortune 500 companies showcase themselves. All on WP.

Endless Selection of Themes 🎨

website design

Developers offer themes for free or at cost. Perhaps you want a site for your restaurant. Or a forum.

You’ll find a theme specifically designed for your niche.

The limit to what your site can do comes down the time (and coding power) you’re willing to direct toward developing it. Or what you’re willing to pay for a pre-made theme.

But we’ve seen impressive tutorials, for those with little time—be it a photography portfolio or an author site created from scratch, in less than one hour.

WP Alternatives?

There are alternatives out there, such as Joomla. But WP has proven themselves to be the people’s favorite by a long shot. Game’s over for now, lads. Home time.

Unless you’re a developer who happens to like another tool, WP is the way to go to get yourself up and running—supported by an army of resources: plugins, themes, tutorials.

What Are the Main Types of Hosting? 🧐

Shared vs. Cloud WordPress Hosting ⚔️

This is partly how we’ve made the selection in this guide. I’ve considered factors ranging from page loading speed to reliability and flexibility with traffic.

Shared WordPress Hosting 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

If you use shared hosting, then you’re one of many clients sharing a server’s resources. This system usually works out well. It’s cheapest and simplest. The company’s team will monitor the server remotely—or on-site—checking that no-one is hogging its bandwidth, so that each website connected to it remains smooth.

The downside of this is if you expect spikes in traffic—or if you exceed you bandwidth/visitor allotment for the month or even hour. Depending on your contact, exceeding your allotment could result in your site going down. Other contracts charge you a fee depending on how much you exceed.

Cloud WordPress Hosting ☁️

Cloud hosting lets you turn up your resources depending on need ASAP. If you’re running some time-sensitive deal—or a major site mentions your online store—just power up.

This isn’t available for WP Managed plans. It combines many servers—all talking to each other—to provide you a greater pool of resources than any server site using shared hosting.

This is also more secure. The virtual network is private only to you. And loading speeds tend to be much nippier than shared.. This, of course, comes at a higher price. We’ve factored all of this into my review. We love to bring you no-nonsense guides like this, with a discussion on possible cons to avoid.

Everyone’s selling the same thing, pretty much. BUT that doesn’t mean some aren’t doing specific thing specifically better than the others, at a better deal.

There’s Loads of Hosting Types

wordpress hosting type

Though fewer main ones. You’ll be very aware of these if you’re a developer:

  1. ☑️ Shared/Web Hosting (not WP hosting)
  2. ☑️ VPS Hosting (not this either)
  3. ☑️ Cloud Hosting (nope)
  4. ☑️ Dedicated Hosting…
  5. ☑️ Reseller Hosting…?

Actually I Tricked You..

There’s overlap with WordPress hosting and the above here, which I’ll go into as I break down each of the top WP host picks. Real quick on the more costly and special ones:

  1. ☑️ Shared is the common type, where people share a server
  2. ☑️ VPS is for people who want a more tailored slice of a server
  3. ☑️ High-quality dedicated hosting is for large websites that need their very own server
  4. ☑️ Cloud get their own server.. just in a virtual fashion
  5. ☑️ Resellers want to sell the hosting ITSELF.

What to Choose?

You’ll need to decide what one of those above types you want for your WP deal. In other words, WP hosts give you compatibility. If you buy WordPress Managed Hosting-surprise surprise—it will still fall under shared of “web” hosting, which is the most common type.

WP Managed Hosting – Yay or Nay?

If you’re a small business—not yet clearly mid-range—WordPress Hosting may serve your needs and if you get it in the shared (“web”) category.

As a fun factoid, shared hosting technically uses cloud methods to give you your service—seeing as you’re not directly connecting your computer to it. But we’ll leave that for now.

Is WordPress Hosting Optimal for Businesses? 🤔

web-hosting-for-small-businessThe main con of WordPress hosting is that it can be clunky.

Providers can give you a bunch of bunch of features and services for your site.

But does it add much performance benefit?

Actually, speeds and memory can be negatively affected.

With duplication of tools and plugins that are already available in WordPress.

Guess What?

The clearest way to update your WordPress site is to do it through WordPress itself—not through the host. That’s just another added layer of the same stuff. WordPress’s tools were natively designed for it, whereas your WP host may have some missing elements or be behind on keeping up on updates.

Also, maybe you know how to use cPanel (it lets you access files, email account stuff, and your database). This reduces your control if you’re an old school type efficient in that setup.

If Your Site Crashes or Gets an Error?

You may not be able to go into the cPanel to see the necessary files, fix or migrate your site—or add a new direct site email address. You have your backup features to handle that. But if you’re worried just ask your WP Managed Plan provider for cPanel access to be bundled in.

Why Bother With WP Hosts? 👨‍💻

A long time ago, we learned that much more work could be done if we outsourced the things we did half-decently. That way, we could focus on our superpowers.

This is essentially the main argument for using WP hosting: automation and outsourcing. You’re putting your trust in a team who will be available on-demand for any tech needs.

Are You a Developer or Working With One?

Again, you can call up your provider and ask for access to the cPanel as part of your WP hosting deal. Doesn’t hurt in the event of a crash. Having access to it will be very useful if you hire a developer, too. This is a fix-around that gets you outsourcing/automated power. With maximal backend control.

That’s it.
